Place pieces of calibrated plastic wire on top of the shaft journals, aligning them along the axis.
Install the main bearing cap and cylinder block.
Remove the main bearing cap.

Measure the radial clearance in the main bearings (fig. 2.168).
If clearance exceeds maximum, replace main bearing using main bearing selection chart, or resurface main journal and install oversized bearing to provide specified clearance.
- Normal clearance: 0.019–0.035 mm
- Maximum gap: 0.10 mm
