This force is transmitted through the tie rods and tie rod ends to the steering knuckles, which turn the front wheels. If the hydraulic booster malfunctions, the vehicle is driven in the normal mode. However, this requires more effort. The rotational movement of the steering wheel is transmitted to the gear. As the gear rotates, its teeth engage with the rack teeth, thereby causing the rack to move.
Removing
Attention! When removing the steering wheel, do not hit the shaft with a hammer. The steering column may be deformed.

Set the wheels of the vehicle to the straight ahead position.
Remove the steering wheel with a suitable puller.
Using a chisel and a hammer, make grooves in the heads of the steering lock mounting bolts.
Loosen the screws with a screwdriver.

Dismantle the part of the steering lock mechanism (pic. 5.11).
Examination
Check the steering column bearing for damage.

Check the length of the steering shaft (pic. 5.12).
Replace steering shaft if necessary.
Length: 211.6 mm.

Check operation of steering column tilt and fore/aft adjustment mechanisms (pic. 5.13).
Make sure that the lever moves smoothly from the position «unlocked» into position «blocked».
Make sure that the steering shaft is securely fixed when the lever is in the position «blocked».
Replace steering shaft if necessary.
Installation
Install the steering lock part to the steering shaft.
Make sure the locking mechanism works properly.
Install new locking mechanism mounting bolts.

Tighten the bolts until the heads break off (pic. 5.14).

Lock the steering column tilt lever (pic. 5.15).
- Tighten bolt A.
- Tighten nut B.
- Tighten nut C.
Attention! Do not strike in the direction of the axis of the shaft.
Set the wheels of the car to the straight ahead position, install the steering wheel.
