Backlash check
1. With the front wheels in the straight ahead position, start the engine.
2. Carefully turning the steering wheel left and right, make sure that the steering wheel play is correct (0-30 mm).
Check for looseness and excessive play
Check the steering wheel for looseness or excessive play in the axial direction of the steering shaft and four directions around the circumference of the steering wheel.
If malfunctions are found, check the following components and repair or replace the corresponding parts:
- Column bearing wear
- Looseness of the installation part of the steering column
- Looseness of the installation area of the column
- Excessive play in the intermediate shaft joint
- Excessive play in the steering gear
Steering wheel force check
1. Make sure that the correct size tires are installed on the vehicle and that the tire pressure is correct.
2. Park the vehicle on a firm, level surface with the front wheels in a straight ahead position.
3. Remove the driver's airbag module.
Attention. Failure to follow safety instructions when handling airbag modules can result in serious injury. Before working on airbag modules, read the relevant safety regulations (see chapter "Passive safety").
4. Start the engine at idle.
5. Verify that the electric power steering fault indicator is not lit or flashing.
6. Using a torque wrench, measure the moment of resistance to rotation. If the measured value exceeds the norm, check the condition of the steering gear and rods.
Note:
Moment of resistance to rotation of the steering wheel (indicative value): no more than 7.8 Nm.
The method of verification by comparison with another vehicle of the same model is also applicable.
The moment of resistance to rotation of the steering wheel may vary depending on the following conditions:
- Road condition: dry-wet, asphalt-concrete.
- Tire condition: brand, degree of wear, tire pressure.
