For more effective protection in the event of an accident, the seat belts installed on the driver and front passenger seats are equipped with pyrotechnic pretensioners and load limiters. In the event of a sufficiently strong frontal (or close to the frontal) in a collision, the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners are deployed simultaneously. Pretensioners provide rapid tightening of the belts and eliminate their slack during the deployment of the airbags. Seat belt pretensioners will not be able to effectively protect people in a traffic accident if the belts are not fastened correctly. The seat belt load limiter, acting in a controlled manner, releases the belt webbing to reduce the load on the passenger's chest to a safe level.

If the front passenger air bags have a switch, it must be in the "ON" position to allow the seat belt pretensioners to deploy in a vehicle collision.

Warning! Improper disposal of seat belt pretensioners or disposal of vehicles with the pretensioner system not deactivated is dangerous. Failure to take the necessary safety precautions may result in personal injury. For instructions on safe disposal, contact your authorized Mazda dealer.

Seat belt pretensioners only activate when a frontal impact is severe enough (or close to the frontal) collision of the vehicle. Pretensioners do not generally deploy in rollovers, side impacts, or rear impacts. When the air bags inflate and the seat belt pretensioners deploy, non-toxic smoke is released. The appearance of smoke does not indicate any fire. This gas does not usually have a harmful effect on the well-being of vehicle occupants. However, people with sensitive skin may experience mild skin irritation. If any particles or residue from deployed air bags or pretensioners come into contact with the skin or eyes, immediately wash them off with water.
