Checking the working fluid level
Check the power steering fluid level.
If necessary, top up the fluid level to normal.
Power steering fluid ATF M III or equivalent (e.g. Dexron®II).
Checking for leaks in working fluid
Start the engine and let it idle.
Turn the steering wheel left and right until it stops to increase the working fluid pressure.
Caution! If you keep the steering wheel turned all the way for more than 5 seconds, the temperature of the working fluid will increase significantly, which will adversely affect the operation of the power steering pump.
Check for fluid leaks.
If a leak is detected, replace the appropriate pipe or hose.

Attention! Possible places of liquid leakage are shown by arrows in Figure 5.3.
Checking the pressure of the working fluid in the hydraulic system
Fig. 5.4. Special device for measuring the pressure of the working fluid in the hydraulic system
Assemble the special tools as shown in Figure 5.4.
Fig. 5.5. Connecting the device to the power steering pump hoses
Disconnect the pressure line from the power steering pump and connect special devices (Fig. 5.5).
Tightening torque: 29.4–44.1 N·m.
Remove air from the system.
Open the valve fully.
Start the engine and turn the steering wheel left and right until it stops to increase the working fluid temperature to 50–60°C.
Fig. 5.6. Checking the pressure with the valve closed
Close the valve completely. Increase the engine speed to 1000–1500 min⁻¹ and measure the pressure generated by the pump (Fig. 5.6).
If the pressure is not within the normal range, repair or replace the power steering pump parts.
Working fluid pressure: 10.80–11.29 MPa.
Caution! If the valve is left closed for more than 5 seconds, the temperature of the working fluid will increase significantly, which will adversely affect the operation of the power steering pump.

Open the pressure gauge valve completely and increase the engine speed to 1000–1500 min⁻¹ (Fig. 5.7).
Turn the steering wheel left and right until it stops, then measure the pressure of the working fluid in the steering gear housing.
If the pressure is not correct, repair or replace the steering gear components.
Working fluid pressure: 10.80–11.29 MPa.
Remove the special tools. Install the pressure pipe and tighten it to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 29.4–44.1 N·m.
Remove air from the system.
