Fig. 1.156. Gear shift diagram

The car uses a conventional gear shift pattern as shown in the figure (for 5- and 6-speed gearboxes) (fig. 1.156).

When changing gears, fully depress the clutch pedal. After engaging the gear, smoothly release the clutch pedal.

5-speed gearbox

The safety device prevents accidental engagement of reverse gear "R" from position "5", corresponding to fifth gear. In order to engage reverse gear "R", first move the lever to the neutral position.

6-speed gearbox

Vehicles with a 6-speed transmission are equipped with a device to prevent the reverse gear from being engaged by mistake. Press the gearshift lever straight down and then move it to the "R" position.

Warning! Do not keep your foot on the clutch pedal all the time. Press the clutch pedal only when changing gears. Do not try to prevent the vehicle from rolling downhill by slipping the clutch. Prolonged or intense slipping of the clutch will lead to premature wear of the components and failure of the clutch. Make sure the vehicle is stationary before engaging reverse gear. Engaging reverse gear while the vehicle is moving may cause damage to the gearbox.

Note: If reverse gear is difficult to engage, return the gearshift lever to neutral and release the clutch pedal. Then try engaging reverse gear again.
