Removal

1. Remove the cylinder head, see Section Removal and installation the cylinder head/replacing the cylinder head gasket.

2. Remove the camshaft, see Sections Removal and installation the camshaft/adjusting the valve timing, Removal and installation the camshaft, Camshaft/camshaft drive.

Caution! If the parts of the distribution mechanism are to be reinstalled, they must be installed in their original places. To avoid confusion, it is recommended to prepare a suitable layout board.

3. Engines with 2 overhead camshafts: Remove the plate pushers and place them on a board.

3. Engines with 2 overhead camshafts: Remove the plate pushers and place them on a board.

4. Remove the valve springs. To remove the valve springs, use standard valve spring pliers.

5. Compress the valve springs and remove the crackers. Remove the pliers. Remove the valve. Remove the upper valve cups, springs and cups at the bottom.

6. Remove the oil seals, see Section Replacing the valve stem seals.

Installation

1. If the old valves and cylinder head are to be installed, the valve guides should be checked before assembly. If the new valves are to be installed in the old cylinder head, the valve chamfers in the cylinder head and the valves themselves should be machined.

2. Clean the valves with a scraper and wire brush to remove any remaining carbon deposits.

3. Engine B3, B5, B6 (SOHC), BP (SOHC): Check the rocker arms and rocker shaft for grooves and wear.

4. Lightly lubricate the valve stem and insert each valve into its old position. The new valves should first be lapped in with grinding paste, see Section Checking/adjusting valve clearance.

5. Thoroughly clean all parts and lubricate moving parts with engine oil.

6. Mandatory replace oil deflector caps.

7. Insert the valves into the cylinder head. Make sure that the inlet and outlet valves are installed in the correct order.

8. Insert the lower valve spring cups.

9. Install the springs and upper valve spring cups.

10. Compress the valve springs with pliers and insert the valve crackers so that they fit into the valve grooves. Remove the pliers and install the remaining valves.

11. Lightly tap the valve stem with a plastic hammer to ensure the crackers are in the correct position.

12. Engines with 2 overhead camshafts: Lubricate all tappets with engine oil and insert them into the corresponding holes.

13. Install the camshaft, see Sections Removal and installation the camshaft, Camshaft/camshaft drive, Distributor shaft/camshaft actuator.

14. Replace the cylinder head gasket, install the cylinder head, see Section Removal and installation the cylinder head/replacing the cylinder head gasket.

15. Adjust the valve clearance, see Section Checking/adjusting valve clearance.
