- disconnect the air hoses from the automatic starter and disconnect its plug connector;
- Warm up the engine by letting it run at 2000 rpm until the thermostat opens. Do not warm up the engine at idle, because after several minutes of operation in this mode, the carbon monoxide content (SO) in the exhaust gases will be distorted;
- make sure the air filter element is clean. Adjust the idle speed of the engine without removing the air filter;
- check the technical condition of the ignition system and the setting of the ignition timing;
- make sure there is no outside air leak (through vacuum hose connections, carburetor seals, etc.);
- make sure that there are no significant leaks in the exhaust system;
- make sure that all consumers of electricity with a large load (electric fan of the cooling system, headlights, rear window heating element) off.
Adjusting screw 1 (see photo) amount of the mixture, set the crankshaft speed in the range of 800-900 rpm on cars with manual transmission and in the range of 950-1000 rpm on cars with automatic transmission.
The CO content in the exhaust gases is best controlled using a gas analyzer. If it is not available, you can achieve the required CO content as follows:
- set the proper idle speed of the crankshaft;
- remove the plug from the adjusting screw 2 quality (composition) mixture and, turning it in the right direction, set the maximum speed of the crankshaft;
- with screw 2, restore the normal speed of the crankshaft and repeat the above operations until the engine increases the speed without interruption and does not stall when it decreases;
- reduce the crankshaft speed by 50 rpm;
- replace screw cap 2.
To adjust the CO content in the exhaust gases using a gas analyzer:
- set the required idle speed of the crankshaft;
- remove the plug of screw 2 and, turning it in the right direction, bring the CO content in the exhaust gases to 1.5-2.0%;
- repeat, if necessary, adjusting the crankshaft speed with screw 1;
- repeat these operations until you set the CO content in the range of 1.5-2.0% at the desired crankshaft speed.
