The ignition system of SKYACTIV gasoline engines uses individual ignition coils placed directly on the spark plugs. Each ignition coil has an ion sensor built into it. The ignition coils generate high voltage required for spark formation by electromagnetic induction.
Spark plugs generate the spark needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture. The spark plug's central electrode is iridium coated, and the ground electrode is platinum coated. Due to the increased efficiency of the iridium electrode, the size of the central electrode can be significantly reduced, which means that the contact area with the fuel-air mixture is increased and the ignition process is optimized.

The optimum ignition timing relative to the vehicle's driving conditions is achieved by the integrated ignition control function in the engine control unit.
