1. Fasten your seat belt.
2. Check if the parking brake is applied.
3. Manual transmission - depress the clutch pedal and move the gear shift lever to neutral position. Continue to hold the clutch pedal and start the engine.
Automatic transmission - place the shift lever in the "P" (park) or "N" position (neutral position).
Caution! Do not hold the starter button in the pulled-out position for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or fails to start, wait 5-10 seconds before pulling the button out again, otherwise you may damage the starter.
Comment (For 2.0 engine [12-valve]). Sometimes an engine that hasn't been running for a long time may seem noisy. The noise should disappear once the engine reaches its normal operating temperature. If the noise persists, contact a Mazda service center.
Cars without a push-button starter
Cold engine
1. Press the gas pedal all the way down and release it.
2. Turn the key in the steering wheel lock to the position "START (III)" and hold until the engine starts (maximum 10 sec.), then release the key.
3. After starting the engine, press the gas pedal halfway and release it to reduce engine speed.
4. It takes approximately 10 seconds to warm up the engine.
Caution! Slowing down at high revs for long periods, (5 minutes or more) may increase the temperature of the exhaust system and thereby damage the vehicle.
Warm engine
1. Press the gas pedal, allowing the engine to run at medium speed. Do not add gas.
2. Set the steering wheel lock key to position "START (III)" until the engine starts completely.
3. When the engine runs smoothly, release the key and gas pedal.
Violation of the spark formation process in the engine
If the engine is warm and does not start at high outside temperatures, the cause may be a problem with the spark formation process. To do this, you need to repeat the launch after 1-2 minutes.
1. Press the gas pedal fully and hold it. Do not add gas.
2 The key in the steering wheel lock must be in position "START (III)" before starting the engine.
3. Once the engine starts running smoothly, release the key and gas pedal.
For vehicles with push-button start
Forced launch
Use the starter button only to start a cold or warm engine.
Automatically shut-off forced engine start button
Once the engine reaches functional temperature, the button automatically retracts.
Cold engine
At outside temperatures above 20°C:
- 1. Do not press the gas pedal.
- 2. Pull out the engine start button completely.
- 3 Turn the key in the steering wheel lock to position "START (III)" and hold it until the engine starts completely.
- 4 Release the key only when the engine starts to run smoothly; repeat these operations if the engine stops after starting.
- 5 Press the engine start button to the middle (to maintain engine speed at approximately 1100-1200 rpm) as soon as the engine runs smoothly; you must wait 50 seconds for the engine to warm up, then fully press the forced start button.
At temperatures below 20°C:
- 1. Do not press the gas pedal.
- 2. Pull the engine start button out fully.
- 3. Set the key in the steering wheel lock to position "START (III)".
- 4. Release the key when the engine starts. Repeat this operation if the engine stalls after starting.
- 5. Once the engine starts, press the engine start button slightly to allow the engine to run smoothly.
- 6. Once the engine has reached normal operating temperature, fully depress the engine start button.
Caution! Slowing down at high engine speeds (5 minutes or more) may increase the temperature of the exhaust system and damage your vehicle.
Warm engine
1. Press the gas pedal halfway and hold it. Do not add gas.
2. Turn the key into the steering wheel shaft locks to the position "START (III)" before starting the engine.
3. If the engine runs smoothly, release the key and gas pedal.
Violation of the spark formation process.
If a warm engine does not start at high outside temperatures, it means the spark formation process is disrupted. Please wait a bit and try to start again.
1. Press the gas pedal fully and hold it. Do not add gas.
2. Turn the key in the steering wheel lock to the position "START (III)" and hold until the engine starts.
3. After starting the engine, release the gas pedal and the key.
Starting the engine
(gasoline engine with fuel injection system)
1. Fasten your seat belt
2. Check if the parking brake is applied.
3. Manual transmission - fully depress the clutch pedal and set the gearshift lever to neutral position. Hold down the clutch pedal and begin to start the engine. Automatic transmission - place the gearshift lever in position "P" (Park) or "N" (neutral position).
Caution! Do not hold the starter button for more than 10 seconds. If the engine stalls or is difficult to start, wait 5 to 10 seconds before pressing the starter button again, otherwise you may damage the starter.
1. Set the key in the steering wheel lock to position "START (III)" and hold until the engine starts (maximum 10 sec.), then release the key.
2. It takes 10 seconds for the engine to warm up.
If the outside temperature is -18°C or if the vehicle has not been used for several days:
- 1. Turn the key in the steering wheel lock to the position "START (III)" and hold until the engine starts, then release the key.
- 2. The engine, once started, allows starting at the same temperature without using the gas pedal.
Note: Whether the engine is warm or cold, never press the gas pedal before starting the engine. If starting a warm engine without using the gas pedal is difficult after several attempts, press the gas pedal halfway.
Comment! (For 2.2i and 2.0i [16-valve] engine) If the car has not been used for a long time, engine noise may be heard at first. The noise should disappear when the engine reaches normal operating temperature. If the noise persists, contact a Mazda service center.
