Remove the cylinder head, as stated above.
Remove the camshaft drive chain (see above).
Disconnect the gearbox from the engine, proceeding as described in the section "Manual transmission".
Remove the water pump.
Remove the flywheel, first locking it with locking tool 49E 301 0160.
Turn the engine over.
Remove the clutch housing support plate.
Remove the oil pan.
Remove the oil pump and oil pump drive sprocket.
Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal retainer.
Check or mark the caps and connecting rods.

Loosen the connecting rod bolt nuts, remove the connecting rod caps and lower connecting rod bearing shells, and mark the shells.
Remove the pistons with connecting rods through the cylinders and place them in order.
If necessary, mark the main bearing caps and remove them together with the lower bearing shells using the 49 221 270 B puller on the rear support.
Remove the crankshaft, upper bearing shells and thrust washers on the rear support and place them in order.
