Removal
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery.
Warning! This will erase the engine fault memory or the radio security code. Before disconnecting the battery, read the instructions in Section Removal and installation the battery.
2. Remove the steering wheel, see Chapter Suspension and steering system, Chapter Removal and installation the steering wheel.

3. Unscrew the upper steering column trim and remove it. Sedan/compact: Remove the lower steering column trim and the steering column switch.
4. Unscrew the speedometer shaft nut on the gearbox and remove the speedometer shaft.
5. Unscrew and remove the instrument panel visor.
6. 9/85 - 9/89 release: Disconnect multi-pin plugs from switch blocks.
7. Loosen the bolts and carefully remove the instrument cluster. Disconnect the speedometer shaft and all electrical connectors from the back, then remove the instrument cluster.
Installation
Hatchback since 10/89.

1. Connect the multi-pin plugs to the back of the instrument panel.
2. Install the speedometer shaft on the back side of the shield.
3. Insert and screw the instrument panel.
