Switching scheme
In the event of a malfunction of the traction relay, the gear in the starter does not enter the ring gear of the flywheel. Because of this, the starter cannot turn the crankshaft. This defect is more common than damage to the starter motor itself.
Examination
1. Remove the starter.
2. Disconnect the field winding cable from terminal C.
3. Connect the traction relay with auxiliary cables to the battery. The starter gear should pop out.
Attention! The cables can be connected for a maximum of 10 seconds, otherwise the winding of the traction relay will burn out.
4. Disconnect the ground cable from terminal C. The starter gear must remain depressed, otherwise replace the relay.
5. Disconnect the ground cable on the starter housing, the gear must retract, otherwise replace.
Removing
1. Unscrew the 2 mounting bolts and the relay cable terminal from the drive housing and disconnect the traction relay. Remove washers.
Installation
1. Install the traction relay with washers, attach to the starter lever and screw with a little force (5 Nm).
2. Check the traction relay as described above.
3. Install starter.
