Attention. When performing work on the components of the airbag system, observe all necessary precautions and safety precautions (see section at the beginning of the chapter).
Note: The driver's airbag module is installed in the steering wheel by the latches.
Removing
Note: If the ignition is turned off (engine off or on) when the driver's door is open, the steering wheel lock can be temporarily released.
1. Turn off the ignition.
2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least one minute.
3. Turn the steering wheel to the position shown in the figure and insert a suitable tool (e.g. TORX T30 screwdriver with a diameter of 6 mm) through the service hole, press and unhook the lock.
4. Turn the steering wheel to the position shown in the figure and, inserting a suitable tool through the service hole, press the area of the latch indicated by the arrow in the figure to unhook the latch and hook.
5. Turn the steering wheel to the position shown in the figure and, inserting the tool through the service hole, press the lock area indicated by the arrow in the figure to unhook the lock and hook (the driver's airbag module must disengage from the steering wheel).
Attention. When disconnecting the driver's airbag module, support it with your hand. Otherwise, the airbag module may fall out and be damaged.
6. Using a flathead screwdriver, carefully pry off the locking device, but do not remove.
7. Disconnect the airbag module connector.
8. Disconnect the horn switch connector.
9. Remove the driver's airbag module.
Installation
Attention. If the driver's airbag module is connected to the appropriate wiring harness, it may become entangled with the horn switch wiring, resulting in damage to the wiring. When connecting the connectors, make sure that the different wires do not tangle with each other.
1. Turn the top side of the driver's airbag module towards the steering wheel and connect the connectors shown in the illustration.
2. Connect the airbag module connector.
3. Turn the driver's airbag module 180 degrees.
4. Align the pins of the driver's airbag module with the holes in the steering wheel.
5. Press the pins of the driver's airbag module until it clicks.
6. Verify that the quick connector is secure by gently pulling on the driver's airbag module.
7. Turn on the ignition (engine off or on).
8. Verify that the airbag system indicator flashes for 6 seconds and goes out. If the airbag system indicator does not illuminate, perform a system check using the on-board self-diagnosis using the M-MDS.
