Removing
The camshaft drive belt must be removed in the following cases: when removing the cylinder head, oil pump and water pump.
Disconnect the wire from the negative battery terminal.
Loosen the alternator mounting bolts, loosen the drive belt tension and remove it.
Remove the alternator drive pulley.
Remove the crankshaft pulley by unscrewing the six mounting bolts on the toothed pulley.
On vehicles with a B6 EGI engine, place a lifting device above the engine and hook the cable into the lifting eye on the timing chain drive end. Remove the upper engine mount bracket.
Remove the front toothed belt guards.
Turn the crankshaft by the pulley bolt clockwise so that the marks on the camshaft sprocket or on the camshaft sprocket, on the crankshaft sprocket are against the marks on the rear toothed belt guard.
Loosen the idler pulley bolt.
Move the tension roller aside using the lever or by pulling the opposite branch of the belt, and tighten the tension roller mounting bolt.
Remove the camshaft drive belt.
Installation
Check whether the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket or the camshaft sprocket and on the crankshaft sprocket are aligned with the marks on the timing belt rear cover (see photo).
Put the toothed belt on the pulleys.
Loosen the idler pulley mounting bolt so that it self-adjusts.
Tighten the idler pulley bolt.
Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise on the pulley bolt.
Make sure that the alignment marks on the toothed pulleys and the back cover of the toothed belt match.
Check the tension of the camshaft drive belt; on engines B3, B5, B6, the normal belt deflection when pressing on the branch between the camshaft pulleys and the crankshaft with a force of 10 kgf should be within 9-13 mm, on the B6 EGI engine, the normal belt deflection when pressing on the branch between the camshaft pulleys with a force 10 kgf - 10-11.5 mm.
Install the front toothed belt guards.
Install the alternator drive pulley.
On vehicles with a B6 EGI engine, install the upper engine mount and disconnect the hoist cable from the engine.
Install the crankshaft pulley.
Put on the water pump and alternator drive belt.
Tighten the belt by moving the alternator away from the engine and tighten the alternator mounting bolts.
Connect the wire to the negative terminal of the battery.
Start the engine and check the ignition timing.
