Note: On B3, B5 and B6 EGI engines, valve clearances are automatically compensated by hydraulic tappets.
Warm up the engine.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Turning the crankshaft with a wrench by the head of the crankshaft pulley bolt, set the exhaust valve of the 1st cylinder to the fully open position.
The crankshaft can also be turned by the front wheel. To do this, lift one side of the car with a jack until the front wheel rotates freely, install a safety stand and engage 4th or 5th gear.
Using a set of feeler gauges, check the clearances of the intake valve of the 3rd cylinder and the exhaust valve of the 4th cylinder between the ends of the adjusting screw tip and the valve stem.
If there is any deviation from the norm, adjust the clearances of these valves.
Adjust the clearances of the remaining valves by successively turning the crankshaft to the position of full opening of the exhaust valves of the 3rd, 4th and 2nd cylinders, observing the order indicated in the table.
| Fully open the exhaust valve of cylinder number | Adjust the clearance of the intake valve of cylinder number | Adjust the clearance of the exhaust valve of cylinder number |
| 1 | 3 | 4 |
| 3 | 4 | 2 |
| 4 | 2 | 1 |
| 2 | 1 | 3 |

Install the cylinder head cover back into place.
