Drain the coolant.
On vehicles with the B6 EGI engine, install the upper suspension bracket and disconnect the hoist cable from the engine.
On VZ, V5, V6 engines, disconnect the muffler inlet pipe from the exhaust manifold, and on the V6 EGI engine, from the turbocharger.
On the B6 EGI engine, remove the turbocharger.
Remove the intake manifold, air and vacuum hoses, disconnect electrical connectors, disconnect the throttle control cable. On carbureted engines, disconnect the hoses from the carburetor.
On carbureted engines, disconnect the hoses from the fuel pump, and on fuel-injected engines, from the fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator.
Disconnect the wires from the spark plugs and the ignition distributor and remove the ignition distributor cover.
Disconnect the spark plug sensor connector.
Disconnect the hose from the engine cooling jacket outlet pipe.

Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor plugs.
Remove the cylinder head cover.
Loosen the cylinder head mounting bolts in the reverse order of tightening (see photo) and remove the washers.
Remove the cylinder head.
Remove the cylinder head gasket.
Thoroughly wash the mating surfaces of the parts with solvent. Do not clean the mating surfaces of aluminum parts under any circumstances.
