Disconnect the wire from the negative terminal of the battery.
Remove the engine hood.
Remove the battery and its mounting bracket.
Place the car on a lift and raise it.
Remove the engine shield.
Drain the oil from the engine sump and gearbox, drain the coolant.
Loosen the nuts securing the ball joint pins of the front suspension arms to the steering knuckles.
On vehicles with the B6 EGI engine, disconnect the transmission relay from the engine block.
Remove the ends of the inner joints of the front wheel drive shafts from the gearbox axle gears.
Disconnect the gear selection and shift rods from the gearbox.
On B3, B5, B6 engines, disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold; on the B6 EGI engine, disconnect it from the turbocharger.
On carburetor engines
Remove the air filter.
Disconnect the throttle control cable from the carburetor.
Disconnect the fuel supply and drain hoses from the fuel pump.
Disconnect the wires from the electrical components installed on the engine.
On engines with fuel injection system
Remove the turbocharger.
Disconnect the throttle control cable.
Remove the air filter housing with the air flow meter and ignition coil.
Disconnect the fuel inlet and outlet hoses from the fuel filter and pressure regulator.
Disconnect the wires from the injectors, throttle position sensor, temperature and pressure sensors. Disconnect the terminal block from the ignition distributor sensor block. Disconnect the plug connectors on the engine and gearbox.
On all engines
Disconnect the speedometer drive flexible shaft from the gearbox.
Disconnect the wires from the starter and generator.
On carbureted engines, remove the ignition coil from the side member.
Loosen the clutch cable retaining nut and disconnect the cable from the gearbox.
On vehicles with automatic transmission, disconnect the shift control cable from the transmission.
On VZ, V5, V6 engines, disconnect the hoses from the radiator and remove the radiator.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the engine.
Loosen the nuts securing the front and rear suspension supports to the powertrain suspension crossmember.
Secure the power unit.
Remove the upper suspension cushion.
Raise the power unit and remove it from the engine compartment.
Install the power unit in the reverse order of removal, taking into account the following:
- each time the power unit is removed, it is recommended to replace the differential box seals, clamps and self-locking nuts;
- replace sealing gaskets if necessary;
- after connecting the throttle and clutch actuators, adjust them;
- when installing the front drive shafts, take measures to avoid damaging the differential box seals;
- after installing the power unit, start the engine, check the ignition timing and idle speed adjustment, and on cars with a B3 engine, check the adjustment of the valve clearances. Make sure there are no oil or coolant leaks.
