1. Start the engine and press the brake pedal several times, then turn off the engine.
2. Raise the rear of the vehicle.
3. Check that the handbrake cable is correctly routed and securely fastened.
4. Release the handbrake lever.
5. Slowly pull the handbrake lever up and count the number of clicks.
6. Required value:
- Cars up to 9/89 issue and "station wagon" models: Tighten the handbrake lever with a force of approximately 200 N (corresponds to 20 kg)- The lever stroke on cars with drum brakes should be from 7 to 11 clicks, on cars with disc brakes - from 9 to 15 clicks.
- Cars from 10/89, except for "station wagons": Tighten the lever with a force of approximately 100 N (corresponds to 10 kg). The lever stroke should be between 5 and 7 clicks.
7. If the value is not as required, adjust the cable drive. The adjusting nut is located on the cable and can be reached without removing the console.

8. Turn the adjusting nut until the correct lever stroke is achieved. A regular wrench is best for turning. The adjusting nut is self-locking, i.e. it does not need to be locked.
9. After adjustment, lift the rear of the car and, with the handbrake released, turn the rear wheels by hand. They should rotate easily, but the brakes should not rub, otherwise repeat the adjustment.
