1. Start the engine and depress the brake pedal several times, then turn off the engine.
2. Raise the rear of the car.
3. Check the correct laying and perfect fastening of the handbrake cable.
4. Release the hand brake lever.
5. Slowly pull the handbrake lever up and count the number of clicks.
6. Required value:
- Cars up to 9/89, issue. and models "station wagon": Tighten the handbrake lever to approx. 200 N (corresponds to 20 kg) - Lever travel should be 7 to 11 clicks on vehicles with drum brakes and 9 to 15 clicks on vehicles with disc brakes.
- Vehicles since 10/89, except "station wagon": Tighten the lever to approx. 100 N (corresponds to 10 kg). Lever travel should be 5 to 7 clicks.
7. If the value is not as required, adjust the cable drive. The adjusting nut is on the cable and can be reached without removing the console.
8. Turn the adjusting nut until the correct lever travel is achieved. For rotation, a regular key is best suited. The adjusting nut is self-locking, i.e. it does not need to be locked.
9. After adjustment, raise the rear of the car and, with the hand brake released, turn the rear wheels by hand. They should rotate easily, while the brakes should not rub, otherwise repeat the adjustment.
