The Mazda 323 is equipped with a liquid-cooled, in-line, four-cylinder engine located transversely to the direction of travel.

Depending on the model, either a carburetor or an electronic fuel injection system is used to prepare the working mixture, which, as a rule, does not require maintenance.

The front wheels are driven via a manual transmission or a 3- or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Mazda 323 is also available in a four-wheel drive version. Additional elements are needed to drive the rear wheels. The drive of the front and rear wheels is connected by a cardan shaft. The cardan shaft drives the rear wheel differential, from which two drive shafts extend to the rear wheels.

The steering gear is located to the left of the engine and is connected to the steering arms by means of rods. Some models are equipped with power steering.

The brake system consists of a master cylinder, a brake booster, disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. Some models also have disc brakes on the rear wheels.

Depending on the model, the Mazda 323 from 10/89 may be equipped with an anti-lock braking system (ABS).
