- 4WD vehicles: Check plug gasket.
- Transmission oil according to specification:
- Cars up to 9/89: temperature above -18°C: API GL-4 or GL-5 SAE 90 or 80W-90, temperature below -18°C: ATF Dexron-II.
- Cars produced since 10/89: API GL-4 or GL-5 75W-90 or ATF Dexron-II (BP DOHC: only ATF Dexron-II).
Examination
Front wheel drive cars
1. Unscrew the bolt securing the speedometer shaft gear to the gearbox.
2. Remove the gear together with the speedometer shaft from the gearbox housing.
3. Wipe the gear with a clean cloth and reinsert it.

4. Remove the speedometer shaft gear and read the oil level. It should be between the F and L marks.
5. Insert the speedometer shaft gear and tighten the mounting bolt.
All-wheel drive vehicles
1. Raise the vehicle to a horizontal position.
2. If available, remove the engine and gearbox shield.
3. Visually check the gearbox for leaks.

4. Unscrew the test plug (depending on the direction of travel) from the front side of the gearbox housing.

5. The oil level should be at the level of the filler hole. If necessary, add transmission oil.
6. Install the test plug with new gasket and tighten with force 55 Nm.
7. If equipped, install the engine and gearbox shield.
8. Lower the vehicle.
