- Candle key.
- Additionally, it is recommended to buy special pliers, for example, HAZET 1849 to facilitate the removal of candle tips.
The following spare parts must be purchased:
- 4 spark plugs. Prescribed suppositories see chapter Ignition system, Chapter Candles for MAZDA 323.
Removing
1. Disconnect all spark plug tips, pulling on the plugs, not on the cables. The aforementioned pliers make removal easier.
2. Blow out the niches of the candles with compressed air so that when the candles are removed, dirt cannot get into the holes.
3. Turn out the candles with a candle wrench and check the condition of the candles (appearance). With some experience, we can draw conclusions about the condition of the engine from this:
Electrodes and insulators
- Medium gray - proper ignition and mixture quality
- Black - the mixture is too rich
- Light gray - mix too lean
- Oiled - Interruptions in the operation of the corresponding candle or poor insulation of the piston rings (check compression).
1. Check spark plug insulators for surface leakage currents. Surface currents leave thin, uneven traces on the surface. You may need to replace leaking spark plug tips.
Installation
1. Before installation, check the distance between the electrodes using a flat feeler gauge.
2. With new spark plugs, the distance between the electrodes is usually set correctly, see Chapter Ignition system, Chapter Candles for MAZDA 323.
3. To adjust the distance between the contacts, bend the ground electrode. To do this, there is a simple, practical device, otherwise tap on the ground electrode. When bending, rest with a small screwdriver against the thread of the candle, in no case against the central electrode, otherwise it will be damaged.
4. Clean the threads on the candles with a clean cloth.
5. Screw in the spark plugs by hand until they touch the cylinder head.
Attention! Do not twist candles.
6. Tighten spark plugs 20 Nm.
Attention! If no torque wrench is available, tighten new spark plugs with a spark plug wrench 90° (1/4 turn). Tighten used spark plugs only 15°. Spark plugs that are too tight can break or damage the threads in the cylinder head when unscrewed. In this case, repair the thread with UTC or Heli-Coil repair inserts.
7. Connect the spark plug tips according to the firing order 1-3-4-2.
8. Check the tightness of the tips of the spark plugs and ignition cables.
Checking electrical connectors
1. Check the tightness of all electrical connectors on the ignition coil.
2. Replace cracked terminals.
3. Clean corroded contacts with a wire brush or sandpaper, spray with contact spray if necessary.
4. The contacts must not be wet, otherwise clean the contacts and spray with contact spray.
5. Bend ignition cables and check for cracks. If necessary, replace all ignition cables.
