Tools needed: Suitable spark plug wrench.
Necessary details:
  • Four spark plugs.
  • 1.25/1.4 l engines: lubrication.

Caution: Replace spark plugs only when the engine is cold or slightly warm. If the spark plugs are removed when the engine is hot, their threads may damage the light metal cylinder head.

Engine 1.25/1.4 l: Unscrew the oil filler cap, unscrew the nuts and remove the engine casing. Screw the cap back on.

To facilitate installation, mark the high-voltage wires according to the cylinder numbers with numbers from 1 to 4.

Remove all spark plug connectors by pulling on the connectors, not the high-voltage wires. There are special tools for removing the connectors.

If possible, blow out the spark plug recesses with compressed air to prevent dirt from getting into their holes after removing the spark plugs.

Unscrew the spark plugs with a spark plug wrench. Do not tilt the wrench to avoid damaging the ceramic insulator of the spark plug.

If the spark plugs are oily, this indicates wear of the piston rings (check compression).

Check the spark plug insulators for signs of leakage current, which appear as thin, uneven lines on the insulator surface. Replace defective spark plug plugs if necessary.

Installation

Check the distance between the spark plug electrodes (2) with a flat feeler gauge. New spark plugs usually have this distance already set. The gap value is given in the table in Chapter. "Ignition system".

To adjust the gap, bend the side ground electrode (1). There is a simple device (3) for this, and if you don't have one, you can knock on the ground electrode. When bending, rest a small screwdriver against the edge of the spark plug thread, but never against the central electrode (4), as it can be damaged.

Engine 1.25/1.4 l: before installing the spark plugs, lubricate their threads with grease.

Screw the spark plugs into the cylinder head until they stop, without tilting the plugs.

Tighten the spark plugs to 15 Nm (1.3L engine: 20 Nm).

Attention! If you do not have a torque wrench, tighten the new spark plugs with a spark plug wrench by about 90°. Tighten used spark plugs by about 15°. Spark plugs that are too tight can damage the threads in the cylinder head when unscrewing. In this case, the threads can be repaired using special techniques.

Place the plugs on the spark plugs in accordance with the marks made during removal.

Engines 1.25/1.4 l: unscrew the oil filler cap and install the engine casing (cover), tightening its mounting nuts to a torque of 6 Nm. Install the cover back.

Checking electrical connections

Check all electrical connections on the ignition coils for tightness. Replace damaged contacts.

The contacts should not be wet, otherwise clean them and apply a protective compound.

Bend the high-voltage wires and check them for cracks. Replace all wires if necessary.
