Safety precautions when working with an electronic ignition system (Mazda Familia BG)

In the electronic ignition system of MAZDA 323, the ignition voltage can reach 30 kV. Under adverse circumstances, such as humidity in the engine compartment, voltage peaks can break through the insulation and cause shock when touched. To avoid injury and damage to the ignition system, the following should be taken into account when working:

• Do not touch or disconnect the ignition cable with your hand while the engine is running or while the starter is turning the crankshaft.
• Disconnect the ignition system wires only when the ignition is off.
• A capacitor for suppressing radio interference or a voltage indicator must not be connected to the ignition coil ground.
• Connect and disconnect measuring instruments only when the ignition is off.
• The ignition coil must not be replaced with another design. Under no circumstances should an ignition coil designed for a breaker system be installed.
• When heated above 80°C (for example when painting) the engine must not be started immediately after warming up.
• Wash the engine only when the engine is not running.
• When working with spot or electric welding, the battery should be disconnected as a set.
• Persons with a pacemaker are prohibited from working on the ignition system.
