4.5.1. Checking the fan operation
If the fan does not turn on or does not turn off, the fault may be in either the motor or the thermostat. First of all, you need to check the wire connections for breaks and loose contacts. Since the current flows through the ignition switch, it must, of course, be in good condition with its connections. If they are in good working order, the thermostat should be checked at a Mazda workshop. The following quick check can be performed:
- Turn on the ignition and check if the fan is rotating. This is a sign that the engine is in good working order. Otherwise, the fan motor needs to be inspected.
- Start the engine and bring it to a temperature of 88°C (insert a thermometer into the radiator filler neck; remove the cap only after steam has escaped). The temperature should not fall below 78°C during the next check.
- Turn on the ignition.
- Check that the fan is rotating.
- Wait until the coolant cools below 78°C and check if the fan has stopped. If not, then you need to notice the thermostat.
4.5.2. Removing and installing the fan
- Empty the cooling system (chapter 4.1).
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove the plug from the thermostat.
- Remove the radiator as described in chapter 4.2.1 and unscrew the hood with the fan (two bolts at the top, one at the bottom).
- Unscrew the fan motor from the hood. If necessary, remove the nuts and pull the fan blades out of the motor shaft. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
