The shock absorber is filled with oil, so it cannot be thrown away just like that.

In the workshop, the shock absorber is emptied before disposal in the following manner (see below), so that it can be safely thrown away.

Precautions when handling a gas-filled shock absorber: the gas pressure in the shock absorber reaches up to 25 bar. In this regard, when opening the shock absorber, close the work area and use protective glasses.

Clamp the shock absorber in a vice vertically so that the shock absorber rod is pointing downwards.

Clamp the shock absorber in a vice vertically so that the shock absorber rod is pointing downwards.

Drill a hole approximately 20 mm below the bottom of the shock absorber pipe using a 3 mm diameter drill.

Note: Gas-filled shock absorbers will leak gas after drilling a hole. Cover the hole with a rag when the gas leaks. Finally, drill the hole further so that the inner tube is drilled (depth approximately 25 mm). The outgoing gas is colorless, odorless and non-toxic.

Drill another 5mm diameter hole for oil approximately 60mm below the bottom.

Holding the shock absorber over a drain container, pump out the shock absorber oil by moving the shock absorber rod back and forth until it stops.

Allow the oil to drain completely.

Shock absorber oil is mineral and can be disposed of together with engine oil.
