In the workshop, the shock absorber is emptied before disposal as follows: (see below), so that you can safely throw it away.
Precautions when handling a gas-filled shock absorber: the gas pressure in the shock absorber reaches 25 bar. In this regard, when opening the shock absorber, close the workplace and use safety glasses.
Clamp the shock absorber in a vice vertically so that the shock absorber rod points down.
Drill a hole about 20 mm under the bottom of the shock absorber tube with a 3 mm drill.
Caution: Gas-charged shock absorbers will release gas after drilling the hole. Cover the gas outlet with a cloth. Finally, drill the hole further so that the inner pipe is drilled (depth approx. 25 mm). The escaping gas is colorless, odorless and non-toxic.
Drill another 5mm oil hole about 60mm below the bottom.
Holding the shock absorber over the drain container, pump out the shock absorber oil by moving the shock absorber rod back and forth until it stops.
Let the oil drain completely.
Shock absorber oil is mineral oil and can be disposed of together with engine oil.
