Steering column and steering wheel — removal and installation (Mazda BT-50 (1))

Warning: Careless handling of the airbag may cause it to deploy unintentionally, which may cause serious injury. Before removing the airbag, read the section "Precautions during operation and repair work" chapters "Passive safety system".


Remove the parts in the order they are numbered in the assembly drawing "Removal and installation the steering column and steering wheel".

Note: Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.


Notes on removal



1. Steering wheel.

a) Set the front wheels to the straight ahead position.

b) Using a puller, remove the steering wheel.

Note: Do not remove the steering wheel by striking the steering shaft. This may cause damage to the steering column.


2. Ignition lock mounting bolts,

a) Using a chisel and hammer, make slots for a screwdriver on the heads of the ignition switch mounting bolts.

b) Using a screwdriver, unscrew the ignition switch mounting bolts.

c) Remove the ignition switch.

3. Ignition lock cylinder.

a) Set the ignition key to the "ACC" position.

b) Press the pin and, while holding it down, remove the ignition lock cylinder.

Installation Notes



1. Ignition switch mounting bolts.

a) Install the ignition switch parts onto the steering shaft.

b) Make sure the ignition switch is working properly.

c) Tighten the new ignition switch mounting bolts.

d) Tighten the ignition switch mounting bolts until the bolt heads break off.

2. Steering shaft.

v) (Models with steering column adjustment mechanism) Lock the steering column adjustment lever.

b) Tighten nut "A".
  • Tightening torque: 16-23 Nm

Tightening torque: 16-23 Nm


c) Tighten bolt "B".


  • Tightening torque: 16-23 Nm

3. Steering wheel.

Before installing the steering wheel, make sure the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
