In the automotive industry, the process of modernization is continuous; it is not reflected in publications and occurs completely independently of the main changes to models. Since spare parts catalogs and lists are compiled using part numbers, the proper identification numbers are absolutely essential for the correct selection of the required parts.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

This very important number is stamped on the engine bulkhead in the engine compartment and is repeated on a plate attached to the front panel under the windshield inside the passenger compartment on the driver's side (Fig. 0.1). The VIN is also available on the vehicle registration card. The card also contains information about where and when the car was manufactured, the model year and body type.

Engine code and prayer year

The VIN contains important information about the engine: the eighth character from the left in the VIN number is the engine code, and the tenth character is the model year.

Model year coding

  • R - 1994
  • S - 1995
  • T - 1996
  • V - 1997
  • W - 1998
  • X - 1999
  • Y - 2000
  • Z - 2121

Engine coding

  • B - 2.5 l. DVRV 6-cylinder V-shaped

Models 626 and MX-6

  • C - 2.0 l. DVRV 4-cylinder
  • D - 2.5 l. DVRV 6-cylinder V-shaped

The engine code is required when ordering spare parts for it. In addition to being a component of the VIN, the code can also be found on the engine itself. On 4-cylinder engines it is located on the front side of the engine (facing the radiator), bottom left under the oil filter. On 6-cylinder V-engines, the piston is located on the rear of the engine (facing the motor septum) on the right (figure 0.2).

Powertrain number

This number is required when ordering transmission parts. On models with a manual transmission, it is located on the transmission housing. On models with an automatic transmission, it can be found on a plate on the front of the transmission housing (figure 0.3).
