Note: If the valve drive parts are to be used again, they must be installed in their original positions. To avoid possible confusion, it is recommended to prepare a suitable box.

Remove the cylinder head and place it on two wooden blocks.

Loosen the bolts and remove the intake manifold from the cylinder head.

Compress the valve spring using a suitable compressor. Remove the valve cotters and release the valve spring again.
Caution: When removing the crackers, make sure that the valve stem is not damaged by the pressed valve spring plate. Otherwise, the valve will have to be replaced, since a damaged valve stem will not provide the necessary seal. This will result in increased oil consumption and accelerated wear of the valve guide.

Remove the valve spring retainer and valve spring.

Pull the valve down towards the combustion chamber.

Remove the valve stem seal.

Remove other valves in a similar manner.

Installation

Before installing the valves, check the valve guides and, if necessary, machine or regrind the valve seats.

Caution: New valve spring retainers have very sharp edges at the bottom of their valve cotter bore. This can cause damage to the valve stems, scratches, etc. Damaged valves should be replaced. If necessary, the valve spring retainers should be machined and sharp edges removed before installation.

Treat the valve stem in the areas where the crackers are in contact.

For safety reasons, it is essential to replace the valve stem seals.

Lightly lubricate the valve stem and insert the valve. Do not confuse the inlet and outlet valves!

Install the new valve stem seal as described above.

Caution: If the seal is installed without using the plastic protective sleeve, the seal may be damaged. This will result in increased oil consumption by the engine.

Insert the valve spring and its retainer and press them together using a valve spring compressor. Insert the crackers so that they fit into the valve grooves. Release the compressor and install the next valve.

Install all remaining valves, being careful not to confuse the inlet and outlet valves.

Install the intake manifold with a new gasket onto the cylinder head and tighten the bolts crosswise to 20 Nm.

Install the exhaust manifold with new gaskets on the cylinder head and tighten the nuts crosswise to 25 Nm.

Install the cylinder head with a new gasket (see above).
