Warning: The vehicle's exhaust system generates very high temperatures and it is necessary to allow the system to cool completely before touching any of the components. Be especially careful around the catalytic converter, where the highest temperatures are concentrated.
1. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on axle stands.
2. Replacing exhaust system components is mainly a matter of removing the heat shields (where it is equipped), disconnecting the component and installing new ones.
3. The heat shields and exhaust hangers must be reinstalled in their original positions. Due to the high temperatures and mating nature of exhaust system components, rust and corrosion can weld parts together. Applying oil or brake fluid to the joints may weaken the bond at the connection points. However, in some cases it may be necessary to cut the components with a hacksaw or oxyfuel cutter. The latter method should only be used by people who have experience in this work.
