The initial training procedure can be carried out with or without the M-MDS. It is easier to activate initial learning with the M-MDS instrument.
Attention. Initial learning forces gearshifts in driving mode with the engine running. The parking brake must be firmly applied and wheel chocks placed under the front and rear wheels before performing the initial learning. Otherwise, the vehicle may start moving and cause injury or equipment damage.
Using M-MDS
Preparing for Service
1. Make sure that initial training is necessary after replacing a particular part.
2. Apply the parking brake firmly and place wheel blocks under the front and rear wheels.
3. Check the automatic transmission fluid level.
4. Connect the M-MDS device to the DLC-2 connector.
5. Use the M-MDS to perform vehicle identification.
6. Start the engine.
7. After the vehicle has been identified, select the following options:
- Choose "Data logger" (data loader)
- Choose "Module" (module)
- Choose "TCM" (transmission control unit)
8. Watching the TFT PID value (automatic transmission fluid temperature), warm up the engine and gearbox to 40-110°C.
Starting the initial training procedure
1. After the vehicle has been identified, select the following options:
- Choose "Self-test" (self-diagnosis)
- Choose "Module" (module)
- Choose "TCM" (transmission control unit)
Note. If the initial learning is not completed, fault code P06B8:00 will be displayed.
2. Start the engine and wait at least 30 seconds.
3. Press the brake pedal and do the following:
Attention.
If the value of the brake fluid pressure sensor is normal or below it, to ensure safety, stop the initial learning. Accordingly, the following must be observed:
- Firmly depress the brake pedal when performing initial learning.
- Do not press the brake pedal again. Otherwise, the pressure in the brake booster will decrease and the braking force will decrease.
Move the selector lever from position P to position D and press the M-MDS clear trouble code button.
If the M-MDS screen returns to displaying fault codes, move the selector lever from position D to position M within 10 seconds and verify that the engine speed rises from idle.
Note.
- The initial learning procedure starts after increasing the engine speed. If the speed does not increase, repeat the procedure from the beginning.
- If the in-progress initial learning procedure is terminated for any reason, the shift position indicator will stop flashing. If this happens, repeat the procedure from the beginning.
After the shift position indicator flashes twice, move the selector lever from position M to position P and stop the engine.
Note. Be careful not to miss the double flash of the shift indicator as this flash only occurs once.
4. Release the parking brake.
5. Move the ignition switch to the ignition on position with the engine off and check for trouble codes. If fault code PO6B8 is displayed, repeat the procedure from the beginning. If any other fault codes are present, troubleshoot the appropriate fault.
Without M-MDS
Preparing for Service
Note. The initial training procedure begins after promotion.
1. Make sure that initial training is necessary after replacing a particular part.
2. Apply the parking brake firmly and place wheel blocks under the front and rear wheels.
3. Check the automatic transmission fluid level.
4. Start the engine.
5. Warm up the engine and gearbox to 40-110°C.
Starting the initial training procedure
1. Start the engine and wait at least 30 seconds.
2. Depress the brake pedal and do the following:
Attention.
If the value of the brake fluid pressure sensor is normal or below it, to ensure safety, stop the initial learning. Accordingly, the following must be observed:
- Firmly depress the brake pedal when performing initial learning.
- Do not press the brake pedal again. Otherwise, the pressure in the brake booster will drop and the braking force will decrease.
Move the selector lever from position P to position N, press the start button once and stop the engine.
With the selector lever in N to M position, press the start button once and, while holding the selector lever in M, wait 5 seconds or longer (ignition on, engine running).
With the selector lever moved from position M to position N, press the start button once and start the engine.
Move the selector lever from position N to position M+ and wait at least five seconds while holding the selector lever in position M+.
Move the selector lever from the M+ position to the M- position and wait at least five seconds while holding the selector lever in the M- position.
When starting at idle, move the selector lever from position M- to position M and check that the shift position indicator blinks twice.
Note. The initial learning process begins after the crankshaft speed rises from idle. If the idle speed does not start to rise, repeat the procedure from the beginning.
After the shift position indicator flashes twice, move the selector lever from position M to position P and stop the engine.
Note. Be careful not to miss the double flash of the shift indicator as this flash only occurs once.
3. Release the parking brake.
4. Clear fault codes using the M-MDS tool and turn off the ignition.
5. Turn on the ignition (engine off or on) and verify that DTC P06B8 is not set using the M-MDS. If DTC P06B8 is displayed, repeat the procedure from the beginning. If the valve body and pressure sensor were replaced with new ones, it is imperative to perform the initial learning procedure. If the initial learning is not done, the engine speed may be exceeded or the shifting jolts will become more noticeable. If the initial learning is not completed, fault code P0688:00 will be displayed.
