Check the exhaust system several hours after the engine has been stopped.
To gain easy access to the system, raise the vehicle on a lift.
Check the pipes and their connections for exhaust gas leaks, which indicate corrosion or damage.
Check the condition of the exhaust system brackets and hangers.
Inspect the underbody of the vehicle for any holes, corrosion, or open seams through which exhaust gases could enter the vehicle interior. Seal any holes you find with sealant.
Check that the exhaust system components are installed freely, without tension, with sufficient clearance relative to the body components.
Check the condition of the engine by inspecting the inside of the exhaust pipe. If the pipe is black and covered with a layer of soot or white flakes, then the engine needs to be adjusted and the fuel system needs to be inspected.
