During operation, engine oil ages - it becomes liquid and contaminated, which leads to premature engine wear.
An oil change should be carried out immediately after a trip on a still warm engine, so that the oil drains better along with contaminants.
To change the oil and oil filter, use the following equipment and materials:
- engine oil of the appropriate specification;
- oil filter;
- new sealing ring for the oil drain plug;
- container with a capacity of 6 l for collecting used oil (you can use an old oil can with a cut off side wall or an old basin);
- capacity for disposal of used oil;
- funnel for pouring fresh oil;
- ring band wrench for unscrewing the oil filter;
- wrench for loosening and tightening the oil drain plug.
In addition, plenty of clean rags and newspapers are needed to wipe up any stains.
Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
Remove the oil filler cap located on the cylinder head cover.
Raise the car on a lift or place it in a horizontal position on a viewing ditch.
Warning! Do not work under a vehicle that is only on a jack.
Place an oil collecting container under the oil drain hole and unscrew the plug. If necessary, press the plug when unscrewing; To prevent oil from escaping prematurely, drain the engine oil. When unscrewing the plug and draining the oil, be careful, as the oil is hot.
Visually check the condition of the engine oil for the presence of metal chips and other inclusions.
Clean the oil drain plug with a clean rag.
When the oil has drained completely, wipe the oil around the drain hole and screw in the drain plug with a new O-ring.
Move the oil collection container under the oil filter.
Loosen the oil filter with a special wrench, then turn it out by hand. After separating the filter from the cylinder block, immediately turn it with the threaded flange upwards in order to prevent the oil from draining from the filter.
Wipe the cylinder block with a clean rag to remove the oil spilled when the filter was removed, otherwise the oil will burn out and smoke when the engine is running. Residual oil will prevent proper installation and tightening of the new oil filter.
Make sure that there are no glued fragments of the filter gasket on the mating surface of the cylinder block. Otherwise, remove them with a scraper.
Lubricate the sealing ring of the new oil filter with fresh engine oil and screw in the oil filter until the gasket contacts the cylinder block, then tighten the filter 3/4 of a turn.
Fill the engine with the correct brand of oil. After a few minutes, check the engine oil level and, if it is near the mark «F», close the oil filler cap.
Run the engine for one minute to allow the engine oil to circulate through the engine.
Stop the engine and wait a little for the oil to drain into the sump.
Check the oil level and top up if necessary. Check for oil leaks from under the plug and oil filter, otherwise tighten the fasteners. On models with an oil cooler, also check for leaks between the oil cooler and the cylinder block. If leaks are found, remove the oil cooler and replace the seal.
