Tools needed to check and adjust ignition timing
1. Plugs
2. Stroboscope
3. Wrench for unscrewing the ignition distributor mounting bolt
1. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
2. Prepare the tools needed to check the ignition timing.
3. Connect the strobe light.
4. On Ford Probe models, remove the jumper wire from the SPOUT connector located between the battery and the diagnostic connector. Connect the TEN and GND terminals of the diagnostic connector.
5. Start the engine and aim the strobe light at the timing straightedge and the yellow mark on the crankshaft pulley. If the yellow mark does not align with the correct mark on the alignment ruler, loosen the distributor mounting bolt and rotate the distributor as needed.
6. Tighten the mounting bolt and check the ignition timing again.
