Examination
1. Remove the timing belt covers.
2. Check the water pump vent (indicated by an arrow) for a leak. If the pump gasket is worn, coolant will leak from this hole.
3. Check for worn pump shaft bearing.
Replacement
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the coolant.
3. Remove drive belts.
4. On 4-cylinder models, remove the power steering pump bolts and move the pump to the side without disconnecting the hoses from it.
5. Remove the water pump pulley, timing belt covers and timing belt.
6. On 4-cylinder engines, remove the bolts (A) power steering pump bracket, water pump upper bolts (B).
7. Remove the bottom pump bolts (indicated by arrows).
8. In 6-cylinder engines, unscrew the water pump bolts (indicated by arrows).
9. Remove the pump.
10. Clean the threads of the pump bolts and the threads of the holes in the cylinder block.
11. Clean off the old gasket.
12. Apply a bead of sealant to the new gasket and install it to the water pump.
13. Install the pump, insert and tighten the bolts.
