When working on the engine starting system, observe the precautions provided for working on the engine electrical system.
Checking the operation of the starter and retractor relay
1. Retractor
2. Starter
3. Vise
4. Ignition lock
Examination
1. First of all, check the connecting wires and the reliability of the connections. Check battery charge. Check up reliability of fastening of a starter. Check the fuses and the interlock switch on the transmission.
2. If the starter turns slowly, check the voltage supply to the starter. It should not fall below 8.0 volts.
3. If the starter supply voltage is OK, however, the starter does not work, remove the starter and check the operation of the solenoid relay. Replace starter or relay if necessary.
Removal and installation
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air filter and air intake pipe.
Models with 4-cylinder engine
3. Remove the bracket located between the intake manifold and the starter.
Models with 6-cylinder engine and automatic transmission
4. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever on the gearbox.
5. Disconnect the connectors for connecting the wires that interfere with the removal of the starter, and move the wires to the side.
6. Remove the shift cable mounting bracket.
All models
7. Tag and disconnect the wires from the terminals on the starter relay. Loosen the fixing screws (indicated by arrows) and remove the starter (left - 4-cylinder models, right - 6-cylinder models).
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
