Test kit for most fuel systems
General check
1. Check that there is enough fuel in the fuel tank.
2. Check if the fuel pump is working. Turn the ignition on and listen to the fuel filler neck, you should hear a short buzzing sound. If the pump does not work, check the electrical circuit of the pump.
3. On Probe models, first check the retarder switch located in the luggage compartment.
Pressure test
1. Disconnect the working mechanism of the cruise control system.
2. Connect a pressure gauge to the hose leading from the fuel filter (4-cylinder models) or between fuel lines.
3. Turn on the ignition (engine not running, air conditioning off). The fuel pump should turn on for approximately two seconds. The pressure in the system should increase and stay at the same mark.
4. Start the engine and warm it up to normal temperature. Record your meter readings and compare them to specifications. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator - the pressure should immediately increase. If you get all the necessary results, then the system is functioning correctly.
5. If, after disconnecting the vacuum hose, the pressure in the system did not increase, increase the vacuum in the pressure regulator by connecting a vacuum pump to it. If the fuel pressure has dropped, then vacuum is not being supplied to the regulator through the vacuum hose. If the pressure does not decrease, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
6. If the fuel pressure is out of specification:
- A) The pressure is too high. Check if vacuum is being applied to the fuel pressure regulator. If vacuum is applied, check for clogged fuel return hose or tube. If the hose is not clogged or kinked, replace the regulator. b) The pressure is too low. Replace fuel filter. If the pressure does not rise, start the engine and close the fuel return hose. If pressure rises above 47 psi, replace regulator.
- V) If the pressure is still low, check if the injector or injectors are leaking. Check the condition of the fuel pump.
Checking the electrical circuit of the fuel pump
1. If the pump is not running, check its fuse in the fuse box. Replace fuse if necessary.
Models 1993-1997
2. If the pump still does not work, remove the cover of the signal transmission unit located in the engine compartment and short the fuel pump and ground contacts with a jumper. The fuel pump should work.
1998 models
3. If the pump still does not work, remove the pump relay from the relay box. Connect a jumper to contacts 30 and 87 of the relay socket.
All models
4. If the pump does not turn on, check for voltage at the pump terminals and for an open in the pump's ground circuit. If the test is positive, replace the pump.
Removal and installation
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Release the pressure in the system.
3. Remove the fuel tank.
4. Disconnect the wires and fuel pipes from the pump.
5. Remove the pump retaining ring.
6. Remove the pump from the fuel tank.
7. Loosen the hose clamps and disconnect it from the pump.
8. Disconnect the connector from the fuel pump.
9. Remove retaining ring and filter.
10. Detach the pump from its bracket.
11. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
