This chapter provides a general description, maintenance and replacement procedures (if possible) elements of these systems.
Check the fuel system and ignition system before deciding if the emission control system is faulty. Diagnosis of some emission control system devices requires special equipment. If you see that the verification procedure is too complicated for you and you cannot cope with the task, contact a specialized service station. Remember that the most common cause of a system failure is a bad connection in the electrical wiring or a bad hose attachment, so check the wiring and hoses first.
This does not mean that the emission control system is difficult to maintain and difficult to repair. Most of the adjustments and checks you can easily make in the garage with the help of available tools.
Carefully follow all precautions in this chapter. It should be noted that the illustrations in this Manual may not always fully correspond to the systems actually installed on your car due to the fact that the manufacturer constantly makes changes to the design of even serial models during the production process.
A plate with information about the emission control systems installed on your vehicle is affixed to the inside of the hood (pic. 1.5). This plate contains the main technical data of these systems and information about their adjustments. The plate also shows the layout of the vacuum hoses related to the system.
