Remove the cap from the fuel tank filler neck, which will cause the pressure in the tank to become equal to atmospheric pressure.
On 1986 and 1987 models, remove the rear seat cushions to access the fuel pump connector. On 1988 and later models, open the hood and locate the fuel pump relay (it is located in the engine compartment next to the clutch drive).
On 1986 and 1987 models, start the engine and disconnect the connector; on 1988 and later models, disconnect the wire from the fuel pump self-releasing relay. Leave the engine running until it stops due to lack of fuel in the fuel distribution line.
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
As a result of the actions taken, the pressure in the fuel supply system decreases. Cover any fuel system connection with a clean rag and carefully loosen the union nut slowly.
