To disassemble the cylinder head, it is necessary to remove the intake and exhaust manifolds and associated parts. Remove the camshaft and rocker arms from the head, complete with shafts, if these parts have not already been removed. Label the parts or place them separately so that you can install them back in their original place later.
Before removing the valves, mark them or prepare a place to lay all the valve parts together and then install them into the old guide bushing.
Using a special tool, compress the springs of the first valve and remove the crackers. Carefully release the valve springs, remove the valve retainer, springs, valve stem seal and retaining ring, and remove the valve from the cylinder head. If removing the valve from the guide is difficult (it doesn't push through well), push it back into the guide bushing and lightly file or roughen the area of the rod near the groove for the crackers.
Repeat the same steps for the remaining valves. Remember to place all the valve parts together so that you can install them back in place later.
After removing the valves and sorting them, clean the cylinder head and check its condition. If a complete engine overhaul is being performed, complete all disassembly operations before cleaning and inspecting the cylinder head.
