Warning: Always replace brake pads on both wheels at the same time. Take precautions when handling brake dust containing asbestos, which is hazardous to health.
Drum brake components
1. Pressure spring; 2. Front brake pad; 3. Regulator; 4. Handbrake regulator; 5. Return spring; 6. Handbrake lever; 7. Rear brake shoe; 8. Handbrake cable; 9. Return spring
Replacement
1. Remove the rear wheels.

2. Remove the brake drum. If it does not come off, screw an 8mm bolt into the provided hole to pry the drum off.
3. Unscrew the mounting nut and remove the rear wheel hub.

4. Clean the brake mechanism from dust and dirt.

5. Press down on the pressure spring, turn the pin and remove the spring.

6. Disconnect the upper return spring from the front brake shoe.

7. Disconnect the adjuster and lower return spring from the front brake shoe.

8. Remove the rear brake shoe pressure spring.

9. Remove the rear brake shoe and disconnect the return spring.

10. Disconnect the regulator spring from the shoe.

11. Remove the pressure spring pins.

12. Remove the handbrake cable from the lever on the rear brake shoe.

13. Lubricate the brake pad mounting areas with high temperature grease.

14. Release the mounting clamp using a screwdriver.

15. Install the handbrake lever onto the new shoe.

16. Replace the pressure spring pins.

17. Connect the handbrake cable to the lever.

18. Connect the return spring to the rear brake shoe.

19. Install the rear brake shoe onto the brake shield.

20. Install the clamp onto the pressure spring pin.

21. Connect the lower return spring to the rear brake shoe.

22. Install the front brake shoe into place, connect the lower return spring and install the hold-down spring.

23. Connect the upper return spring to the front brake shoe.

24. Adjust the handbrake adjuster to decrease the distance between the brake shoes before installing the brake drum.

25. Inspect the brake drum for cracks, scratches and signs of wear. Check the brake drum diameter.
26. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
