Location of camshaft bearing caps in order
1. Inlet valve shaft covers
2. Exhaust valve covers
3. Engine front
4. Rear of the engine
The front head shaft covers are marked with letters and the rear head shaft covers with numbers.

Removing
1. Remove the cylinder head covers, timing belt and camshaft sprockets. If you are removing the shafts from the front cylinder head, remove the ignition distributor (1997 and earlier model years). If you are removing the camshafts from the rear head, then remove the intake manifold.
Attention! Before removing the camshaft bearing caps, align the locating pins of the camshafts with the marks on the end caps.
2. On the front cylinder head, align the dowel pin (A) exhaust camshaft with mark on end cap (IN) and synchronization mark of the shaft sprocket (WITH).
3. On the rear cylinder head, align the dowel pin (A) intake camshaft with mark on end cap (IN).
4. Loosen the shaft end cap bolts in several steps (1/4 turn). Loosen the two outer bolts first and then the two inner bolts (there is also a bolt in the rear head (IN), which must be weakened last.
5. Remove the camshaft seals.
6. Using the indicated sequence, loosen in several steps (1/4 turn) camshaft bearing cap bolts (see fig. The sequence of loosening the bolts of the camshaft bearing caps (front cylinder head) and fig. The sequence of loosening the bolts of the camshaft bearing caps (rear cylinder head)).
7. Remove covers and camshafts.
8. Place the bearing caps in order.
Attention! If necessary, remove the valve lifters with a magnet. Put the pushers in order. Hydraulic pushers (1997 and earlier models) should be kept upside down in clean engine oil.
Examination
Inspect camshafts and tappets (see subsection 3.1.10).

Installation
1. Apply molybdenum grease to the pushers and install them in place.
2. Apply molybdenum grease to the cams and camshaft bearing journals.
3. Install the shafts in the head and align the timing marks of the gears of the shafts.
4. Apply sealant to the outer edges of the front shaft bearing caps.
5. Align the alignment pins of the drive shafts with the timing marks and install the thrust plates of the camshafts by tightening their bolts (see above).
6. Install all shaft bearing caps.
7. Using the sequence shown, tighten in several steps (1/4 turn) cover bolts (see fig. The sequence of tightening the bolts of the camshaft bearing caps (front cylinder head) and fig. The sequence of tightening the bolts of the camshaft bearing caps (rear cylinder head)).
8. Lubricate the new camshaft seal with engine oil and install it in place.
9. Install the caps, lubricated with sealant, on the front of the driven camshafts.
10. Install the remaining parts in reverse order.
