1. The engine start switch is located near the vertex end of the clutch pedal. The switch can have one of two types of connector: three-pin or five-pin. When the ignition key is turned to the Start position and the clutch pedal is depressed, the starter target is closed and the starter starts to work.
2. If the starter does not turn on when the clutch pedal is depressed, adjust the switch (see point 9) and recheck. If the starter still does not engage, check the switch (see point 4) and, if necessary, replace it (see point 7). If the starter engages with the clutch pedal released, adjust the switch and recheck its operation.
3. If the starter does not turn on when the clutch pedal is depressed, this indicates either that there is no voltage supply to the switch, or that its contacts do not close.
4. Using a voltmeter or test light, check for voltage at the switch (see wiring diagram at the end chapter 12). Voltage must be present when the ignition is turned on (engine not running). If there is no supply voltage, repair an open or short in the wiring between the ignition switch and the switch.
5. Check the operation of the switch. To do this, depress the clutch pedal and check that the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 is zero. After the clutch pedal is released, the resistance should become infinite (pic. 9.5). Adjust switch (see point 9).
Replacement
6. Disconnect the wiring connector.
7. Two types of switches are installed on cars.
- A) If the switch is front mounted, turn it 90°and remove it from the bracket.
- b) If the switch is mounted on the side, unscrew the two fixing screws and remove the switch from the bracket.
8. Installation is made in sequence, return to removal.
Adjustment
Note. Front mounted switches are not adjustable. Check clutch pedal height (see paragraph 8).
9. Loosen the fastening nuts and move the switch so that it is closed when the clutch pedal is depressed. At the end of the adjustment, tighten the switch mounting nuts.
