2. Remove the timing belt cover (see chapter 2A or 2B).
3. The water pump has special drainage channels (figure 6.3). If the seal is faulty, coolant will leak out of the designated hole. You may need a portable lamp to find it.

4. Check the condition of the water pump shaft bearing. To do this, grab the pump hub with your hand and gently rock it from side to side. If play is felt, this indicates severe wear of the bearing support.
5. A worn water pump bearing may cause a "howling" sound when the engine is running. Do not confuse this sound with the squealing noise that occurs when the accessory drive belt slips. If you hear a squealing noise while the engine is running, check the condition and tension of the belt.
