Move the selector lever to each position in turn and ensure that it locks into place in each position and fits into the shift plate (figure 9.26). There should be a slight resistance felt when engaging each position.
The selector lever should move between the "drive" and "neutral" positions without pressing the button on the selector knob. The button must be pressed when moving the selector lever from the "drive" position to the "reverse" position.

If the button is too loose or the switch can be moved from the drive position to the reverse position without pressing the button, adjust the switch button. Loosen the lock nut and turn the lever knob until the desired shift cable function is achieved; then tighten the lock nut (figure 9.27).
