Examination
The fuel pump is mounted to the cylinder head at the rear of the engine (from the side of the engine compartment bulkhead).
Structurally, the pump is non-disassemblable and cannot be repaired. However, it is possible to inspect and test the pump without removing it from the vehicle.
Make sure there is gasoline in the fuel tank.
With the engine running, check for leaks at all fuel line connections from the fuel tank to the carburetor. Tighten loose connections.
Check the hoses for any signs of kinks or pinches that could restrict fuel flow. The rate of fuel delivery by the pump is greatly affected by air suction and pinching of the hose on the supply side.
Check for fuel leaks at the pump diaphragm flange.
Disconnect the high-voltage wire of the ignition coil from the ignition distributor and carefully connect the wire to the vehicle ground to prevent sparking. Then disconnect the fuel supply line from the carburetor and place a container underneath it.
Figure 6.1. Checking the fuel pump performance
Turn the engine crankshaft a few revolutions and make sure that a small amount of fuel comes out of the open end of the tube (figure 6.1). If there is no fuel flow, the fuel supply line with filter is clogged or the fuel pump is faulty.
Disconnect the fuel line on both sides and blow it out with compressed air. If the fuel line is not clogged, replace the fuel pump.
Removal and installation
Warning! Gasoline is extremely flammable. When working with fuel system components, the use of open flames, sparking devices, open fire-hazardous lighting devices, and smoking are prohibited. Sparking should be prevented when handling wires and electrical devices. It is prohibited to carry out work in a garage with a natural gas supply.
Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.
Figure 6.2. Fuel pump: 1 – fuel supply and return hoses; 2 – fuel pump; 3 – fuel return pipeline
Use pliers to loosen the clamps, remove and plug the fuel supply and return hoses (figure 6.2). Disconnect and plug the fuel return line.
Loosen the pump mounting bolts, remove the pump, spacer and gaskets.
Install the pump by placing shims on both sides of the spacer.
Connect the fuel lines, start the engine and check for leaks.
