2.9.1. Removing and installing the exhaust manifold

When removing and installing the exhaust manifold, observe the following points:
  • The nuts connecting the flanges between the manifold and the exhaust pipe must be sprayed with a rust remover before unscrewing, as there is a risk that the bolts may break.
  • Always replace the seal if the manifold is unscrewed from the cylinder head.
  • Tighten the manifold flange nuts evenly in a crosswise pattern with a tightening torque of 45 Nm.

2.9.2. Removing and installing the exhaust pipe

Removal and installation do not cause any difficulties. Figure 107 shows the exhaust system as it is installed with a catalytic converter in a gasoline engine. In a pump-carburetor engine, an exhaust pipe is inserted into the exhaust manifold. Designed for installation in an engine running on unleaded gasoline, instead of a catalytic converter with an additional muffler. The exhaust system for a diesel engine is shown in the figure 108. The following points must be especially observed:

  • The seal between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipe needs to be changed regularly.
  • Tighten the quick release bolts and nuts to the torque shown in the illustration 107.
  • After installation, start the engine and check at idle speed to ensure that no exhaust system parts are hitting other parts. In addition, you need to check if there is enough space between the exhaust system parts and the body parts.
