2.8.1.1. Standard engine
Using Figure 106:
- Remove the spark plug drive and unscrew the spark plugs.
- Unscrew the shield (2) on the side of the engine.
- Loosen the V-belt tension on the brushless alternator mounting bracket.
- Remove the V-belt.
- Rotate the crankshaft timing belt pulley until the slot in the pulley aligns with the OT mark. Check the rocker arm for cylinder number one for clearance. Otherwise, the engine needs to be cranked further.
- Unscrew the bolts securing the belt drive pulley at the end of the crankshaft. In this case, the engine must be blocked using a suitable method to prevent it from turning. It is best to engage the gear with the handbrake released.
- Unscrew both drive protective covers and remove the guide shield.

Note: If the flywheel friction surface is scratched, for example when replacing sliding joints, the flywheel must be replaced.
Caution: After removing the timing belt, do not rotate the crankshaft or camshaft, as this will cause the pistons to strike the valves.
- Turn the crankshaft until the marking on the camshaft gear is aligned with the marking on the shield. For an FE engine it should be aligned with marking 2, for other engines - with marking 3. Figure 65 shows the installed drive gear.
- Mark with paint on the opposite side the relationship between the camshaft gear and the timing belt on the top side of the gear.
- Release the tension roller and move it outward until the timing belt is free enough to be removed.
- Disconnect the spring and unscrew the belt drive tension roller.
- Disconnect the drive gear from the crankshaft and remove it if it needs to be replaced. The same applies to the camshaft drive gear. Hold the crankshaft or camshaft in a comfortable manner. A belt with worn teeth needs to be replaced. Other damage includes scratches, abrasions on the sides, or rounding of one or all teeth. In this regard, the drive gears also need to be monitored. Take the belt tensioner with one hand and turn the roller with the other. If there are areas of heavy movement, the tensioner needs to be replaced. When installing the timing belt, align the adjustment marks as described when installing the cylinder head for this engine. After this work is completed, restore the timing belt tension.
2.8.1.2. DOHC engine
- Removal the timing belt is done in the same way as described for a standard engine, however, you need to note the difference that is visible on figure 30.
- Before removing the spark plugs, remove the cover from the middle part of the cylinder head. To do this, you need to release the cap nuts.
- Unscrew the engine mount clamp from the upper transmission drive belt cover before removing the cover.
- Turn the crankshaft. until the gears with control signs are aligned with the slot on the opposite shield. One shaft must have the letter I on it (input shaft), and on the other - E (output shaft). On figure 69 the alignment of the drive gears is shown, but without the timing belt
- Now loosen the belt in a similar manner as described in the last chapter. The instructions in the last chapter regarding the timing belt also apply to this engine. When installing the timing belt, align the timing marks as described for installing the cylinder head of this engine. After these works have been carried out, restore the tension of the timing belt.

2.8.1.3. Diesel engine
- On figure 34 the individual parts of the distribution mechanism of this engine are shown and the work must be carried out using this drawing.
- Unscrew the protective shield from the inside of the wing.
- Loosen the belt and the drive belt of the brushless alternator and remove the compressor of any air conditioning system that may be installed.
- Use a convenient method to block the engine from turning (engage gear) and unscrew the belt pulley from the last part of the crankshaft. Remove the belt drive pulley.
- Unscrew the alternator belt drive roller.
- Release the engine mount from the end side and remove the mount clamp. To do this, you need to use a cable and a lifting mechanism, suspending the engine by the front eye, removed from the suspension, and release the suspension from the load.
- Turn the crankshaft until the points shown in the figure 73 compaction signs will not align. The high pressure fuel pump drive gear must be locked with two 35-40mm long bolts, which, when installed correctly, easily screw into the threads on the console.
- Loosen the tensioner and push outward until the timing belt is released.
- Unscrew the drive roller on the top side and remove the toothed belt after the direction of travel is indicated by an arrow on the belt.
Everything that was said in Chapter 2.8.1 about the toothed belt is suitable for the toothed belt of a diesel engine.
When installing the timing belt, align the control marks as described when installing the cylinder block for this engine. After these works have been carried out, restore the tension of the timing belt. When replacing a timing belt, the following rules must be observed:
- The timing belt can no longer be considered as new after it has been running for 5 minutes.
- After installing the timing belt, check that the teeth of the belt and all drive gears are engaged
- Before closing the engine again, check the lower live gear of the repair gear to ensure that the toothed belt does not slip off the teeth.
- After installation, run the engine for about 5 minutes and check the tension. The belt stretches in the first minutes.
