The Mazda 626 is equipped with a transversely mounted, in-line, 4-cylinder, water-cooled diesel engine. The cylinder block is cast iron, the cylinder head is made of aluminum.
The valves are opened by camshafts located above. Valve clearance is adjusted using adjusting washers and should be checked and adjusted if necessary during maintenance, when knocking noises appear in the valve mechanism or after engine repair. On some models, the camshaft timing belt also drives the high-pressure fuel pump.
