Caution: Allow the exhaust system to cool completely before working on it. When working under a vehicle, place it on secure supports.
Caution! On all models described in this manual, the exhaust system components are connected by flexible pipes. Such pipes are very sensitive to sharp bends. Do not allow exhaust system components to hang on such a pipe, otherwise the pipe will be damaged.
1. The exhaust system consists of exhaust manifolds, catalytic converter, muffler, exhaust pipe, connecting pipes, brackets, hangers and clamps. The exhaust system is attached to the underbody of the vehicle using brackets and rubber mounts. If any part of the exhaust system is faulty or improperly installed, noise and vibration will occur in the cabin.
2. Periodically inspect the exhaust system along its entire length to detect any faults in time. An exhaust system can have a variety of faults, including bent pipes, dents, burnouts, loose connections, and corrosion. Leaks in the exhaust system can result in exhaust fumes entering the cabin. Defective exhaust system components cannot be repaired - they must be replaced with new ones.
3. If the exhaust system components are rusted together, you will have to use a gas cutter to disassemble the system. This type of work should not be done in a garage - the car must be sent to a service station. If you want to save money and replace the exhaust system parts yourself, and don't have a gas cutter, cut the pipes with a hacksaw. You can also use an electric or pneumatic metal cutting machine for this chain. Wear safety glasses when performing this work.
4. Below are some tips for repairing your exhaust system.
- a) When removing exhaust system components, start from the rear of the vehicle and work your way forward.
- b) To make it easier to loosen the fastener, moisten it with a low-viscosity liquid that can penetrate the rusted connection (figure 16.4, a, b).
- c) When assembling the exhaust system, replace all gaskets, clamps and hangers (figure 16.4,c).
- d) When assembling, lubricate all threaded connections with anti-seize compound
- d) Make sure that there is sufficient clearance between the exhaust system components and the body parts to protect the interior floor from overheating. Be sure to install heat shields where required by the vehicle design.
